About Abraham Lincoln

 

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War—its bloodiest war and perhaps its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis. In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy.

Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809 and later moved to Illinois where he began his political career. He served in the Illinois legislature and later as a member of the United States House of Representatives. In 1858, he ran for the United States Senate and although he lost the election, his speeches during the campaign earned him national attention.

 

In 1860, Lincoln was elected as the President of the United States. One of his first actions as President was to strengthen the Federal government. He also called for the voluntary colonization of freed slaves. However, the Southern states did not agree with his policies and began to secede from the Union, leading to the American Civil War.

 

Throughout the war, Lincoln was a strong leader and made several important decisions that helped the Union win the war. One of the most significant was his Emancipation Proclamation, which declared all slaves in Confederate territory to be free. He also oversaw the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery throughout the United States.

 

In addition to his actions during the war, Lincoln also played a key role in the rebuilding and modernization of the United States after the war. He supported the building of the transcontinental railroad and the establishment of land-grant colleges.

 

On April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer, while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. He died the next day, and his death was met with widespread mourning throughout the country. Lincoln is widely considered one of America's greatest heroes due to his role as leader in the Civil War and his work to end slavery and unite the country.
